There are a number of scholarships designated specifically for students who study abroad. Below is a listing of the more familiar scholarship programs but many more may be available. There are many sources for students to investigate additional scholarship opportunities, including:

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. This program enables students who have limited financial means to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two and four-year institutions to pursue semester or academic-year long study opportunities in other countries.
To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. This scholarship is funded out of the application fees for NAU Study Abroad programs. All students paying an application fee to participate on an approved NAU Study Abroad programs are eligible. Awards are typically $500 for semester/year programs and $250 for Summer programs).
To apply, please receive an application from the NAU Center for International Education or print an application on-line.
You will need to submit a one-page essay. Your essay must address the following points:

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award from 45 to 90 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan.

The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities.

Japanses Studies Scholarship: An undergraduate scholarship to study at a university in Japan. Students with a Japanese major or minor are eligible to apply. The scholarship is for a one year study term. The scholarship includes, roundtrip airfare to and from Japan, a monthly stipend of approximately 135,000 Yen. NAU students who have applied to Fukuoka University of Education have received this award in the past. Application forms are available from the web site or at the NAU International Office.
The awards are annual for students wishingto study in Japan for a year.

In the past, this scholarship has been made available to NAU applicants to the Fukuoka University of Education program. Availability is determined on a yearly basis and notification is made to NAU usually in November. NSEP was designed to provide American undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experience in countries and areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation. NSEP focuses on geographical areas, languages and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. The program draws on the broad definition of national security applied by the president in his annual National Security Strategy, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including: sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitivenes.
The 2006-2007 NSEP Boren Scholarships offer funding for study abroad in Summer , Fall, Spring, and year-long programs.. The deadline for applications is February 10, 2006. This scholarship has been created for students from schools with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter (which NAU has) who have a 3.5 GPA or higher and have completed between 56-90 credit hours at the time of application. Applicants must also have at least one full year of study remaining in their degree program after completing their study abroad program. Applicants must show proof of acceptance to a study abroad program prior to application. Due to the early application deadline (see below) in the Spring, NAU study abroad applicants may ask for special consideration from their appropriate study abroad advisor. Applications may be received from the NAU International Office. Or, applications may be downloaded from the Phi Kappa Phi web site. . Or, call 1-800-804-9880 to request an application.

All students in good standing in NAU's Honors program who choose to participate on an NAU Study Abroad program are eligible to apply for a one-time scholarship. Award availability and amounts vary from semester to semester.

This scholarship is available to any NAU student with strong skills in German language who would like to Study Abroad in Germany for an Academic Year. There is no minimum GPA, but the scholarship is very competitive and the successful applicants will have a strong academic background. Students will also need 2 letters of recommendation: it is strongly recommended that one of these be from a German faculty member. Applications and more information are available in the Center for International Education.

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst grants are available to faculty and students in Canada and the US to participate in a wide variety of academic activities in Germany. Edu.de Undergraduate Awards are available for participants in summer, nternship or academic year programs but other grant programs are also offered. The deadline for the edu.de awards for 2002-03 is March 20. Award amounts vary by grant and according to the nature of the program the student proposes to be funded for.

Every semester scholarships may be awarded to USAC Program participants from NAU ($500 awards for semester/year programs and $250 awards for Summer programs) - the number of available scholarships varies by semester.

Students receiving financial aid should also provide a copy of their financial aid award letter. Application Deadline: Spring Semester, April 1st. Fall Semester, November 1st.

University grants or scholarships are based on established criteria as published in the University’s catalog and are awarded after verification that the conditions of eligibility have been met.

The scholarships, which are designed to further international understanding and goodwill, provide for study abroad in more than 160 countries where Rotary clubs are located and some non-Rotary countries such as China and Vietnam. Some 1,300 scholarships of various types will be available from clubs worldwide. Application cycles usually run a year and a half in advance of the period of study and run annually with a deadline in early March.

Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship program http://www.hsfi.org/scholarships/intpolicy.asp
The Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Its purpose is to address the national need to cultivate a diverse talent pool of well-trained and language-proficient professionals.
The program represents a collaborative effort between the HSF Institute, the United Negro College Fund Special Programs (UNCFSP), and the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA).
The IIPP Fellowship program provides students from underrepresented minority groups with specially designed education and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international affairs careers. Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a five-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, and graduate study.

The Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program supports intellectual connections between the United States and Sweden by providing grants to students and scholars.
The Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden of up to $10,000 will be awarded for up to one academic year of study in Sweden. Enrolled under-graduate and graduate students, and qualified scholars are eligible. The recipient must be a U.S. resident.

The Scholarship program provides an opportunity to apply for an award of up to $1,000 to cover travel to Wales and expenses incurred in undertaking studies related to Welsh American history and culture.
Scope: Facilitation of cultural exchange between North America and Wales.
Welsh ethnic connections: Not essential but a connection with Wales is an important asset.
Eligibility: Those aspiring to Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees or equivalent at recognized academic institutions. Application must be supported by the host institution.
Financial need must be documented.
The Scholarship program provides an opportunity for Welsh Americans to apply for a $5,000 award to study to Wales.
