PROGRAM INFORMATION

This program is led by NAU staff member Kathleen Day and operates in cooperation with the Sierra Service Project.

NAU in Honduras is a service learning experience during which students will have the opportunity to work alongside community members to build houses for two Honduran families. Participants will observe the daily life in this small community, where most people survive on a combination of subsistence farming and low-wage income. Students will be able to visit local schools and health centers to understand the services available to residents. Students will also have the option to visit churches to learn about the central role that religion plays in the life of the community. Participants will also spend time in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras, to explore an urban environment and meet with social service organizations.

This program is unique in that it provides a continuation of the conversation surrounding Enrique's Journey, the NAU Reads book for 2009/2010. Participants will visit sites described in the book and gain a deeper understanding of the history and context surrounding it.

Students participating in this program will gain first-hand knowledge of the key issues at play in Honduras today: poverty and unequal distribution of wealth, low productivity, limited educational opportunities and strong pressure to immigrate to the United States.

Please Note: This program focuses on service learning and does not include a faith-based component.
