Most non-immigrants in the US may request a change of status to F-1 student status. To be eligible for the status change, the person must be:
To apply for a change to F-1 status, the following documents must be submitted to US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS):
1. A completed Form I-539: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-539.pdf
2. Form I-539 fee, payable to USCIS by check or Money Order
3. Original I-20 signed by the international student advisor and the student
4. Proof of payment of the SEVIS I-901 fee: www.fmjfee.com
5. Original I-94 card
6. Photocopies of passport identifying pages, US visa, and all immigration
documents related to current and previous status in the US
7. Photocopies of financial support documentation used to request the I-20
8. If applicable, dependent family information included on Form I-539,
original I-20s signed by the student and the International Student Advisor,
photocopies of passport/s, US visa/s, original I-94 card/s, and all other
documentation related to current and previous status in the US.
9. Letter from the applicant indicating why the change of status is requested.
The international student advisor will review your paperwork and will provide the address to which the application must be sent.
