Connecting local students with international students

What is this Program?

International Friends Student Program is a partnership between international students attending NAU and domestic NAU students. International students are each matched up with a domestic student for an intercultural experience. Community organizations and the NAU Center for International Education also sponsor activities for the participants, such as ice skating, karaoke, bowling, hiking, movies, holiday parties, sports activities, dances, barbeques, scavenger hunts, and more!

How are participants paired up?

Partners are matched primarily by age, sex, and interests. If you have a particular country or language preference for your partner we will try to accommodate that, but we cannot guarantee your preference.

What do International Friends partners do together?

Partners are encouraged to attend activities sponsored by community organizations and the Center for International Education and are encouraged to contact each other by phone or email at least once every two weeks. Partners should try to get together at least once a month. Partner activities may include movies, shopping, going to the gym, going out for coffee or ice cream, attending campus events, etc.

Why join this program?

This program provides international students with local support and a contact person in Flagstaff when they encounter difficulties or have questions. It also provides them with an opportunity to learn more about Americans and American culture. Furthermore, it is a great chance to improve English skills! American participants, in turn, learn about their international friend’s culture and many other cultures by participating in

events with other International Friends partners. In a global world where cross-cultural interactions are increasingly important, this program provides an intercultural experience that is invaluable for all involved.
