F-1 Degree Seeking Students

Requirement Information

To be admitted to Northern Arizona University as an undergraduate (Bachelor or first university degree) student, you must meet the four general requirements described below.

Requirement 1: Evidence of Academic Achievement

Students must have completed secondary school, and your official school documents - transcripts or mark sheets - must reflect academic success. Your academic record must show at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) or equivalent to be admissible to Northern Arizona University. You are invited to contact us via email (studynau@nau.edu) to find out if your school marks will allow you admission to the university. If you are considering a transfer to Northern Arizona University from a college or university in the U.S. or another country, you must show a 2.0 GPA or equivalent to qualify for admission.

Admission to the Northern Arizona University does not automatically admit you to the department in which you wish to pursue your major or degree. Each academic major has departmental requirements for admission to the department's degree academic program. Once you are admitted, and you are on campus, we encourage you to meet with an academic advisor to help you meet the requirements for acceptance to a major or degree academic program.

Requirement 2: English Language Proficiency
If English is not your first or native language, you must demonstrate English-language proficiency. This can be done in one of the following ways:

a) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 70 on the new Internet-based TOEFL (iBT), 193 on the computer-based TOEFL (CBT), or 525 on the paper-based test (PBT) taken within the past 2 years.

b) IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of band 6.0 or better.

c) ACT (English sub-score of 21 is required) or SAT (verbal score of 510 is required).
Scores must be received from the testing organization (copies are not acceptable).

d) Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree from an accredited US college or university.

International students who do not meet these language requirements can be conditionally admitted to Northern Arizona University if all of the following criteria are met:

1. Meet all other admission criteria - academic achievement and financial support.
2. Register and pay for the English Level Placement test once you arrive on the NAU campus.

  • The cost of the English Level Placement test exam is USD $30 which can be paid the day of the exam. Checks or cash are accepted.
