Transfer Students

There are 2 different types of transfers - SEVIS Transfers and Credit Transfers (some students may be both)

SEVIS Transfers

SEVIS transfers involve transferring your I-20 from your current school to NAU. Once you have gained admission to NAU, you must give the foreign student advisor at your current school a transfer out form and NAU's transfer in form. We will mail you this form with your admission letter or you can download this form.

Once your current school's international student advisor has released you in SEVIS and sent us the transfer in form, we can send you your new I-20.

Credit Transfers

There are 6 steps to the transfer credit process:

  1. Receipt of transcripts
  2. Receipt of course descriptions/syllabi
  3. Transcript Evaluation
  4. Sending copies of transcripts/and or course descriptions/syllabi to Undergraduate Admissions (for liberal studies evaluation and posting) and the major/minor department (so they can apply credits to the students degree requirements)
  5. Posting (undergraduate admissions)
  6. Equivalencies/substitutions/applying credits to degree requirements

Step 1

You are required to submit an official transcript from each secondary and post-secondary educational institution you have attended in order to be considered for admission. If the document(s) is/are not in English you must provide a certified translation.

Step 2

The second step involves submitting to the Center for International Education detailed descriptions or syllabi of every course you have taken and for which you wish to receive credit towards your NAU degree requirements.  These documents should be submitted in English or have certified translations.

Step 3

Your formal transfer credit evaluation will not be performed until you have paid your SEVIS fee or taken some other step to assure us of your intentions to attend NAU.

Step 4

Once the evaluation has been completed, information regarding your transferred coursework will be sent to your major and/or minor department. A copy will also be sent to NAU undergraduate admissions. We will also send you a letter to let you know this has been done and to let you know if we have received any course descriptions or syllabi.

Step 5

The posting process is completed by undergraduate admissions and normally takes 2 weeks. To see if this has been completed please log-on to LOUIE (www.nau.edu/LOUIE).  You will have received instructions for logging on and setting your password in your admission letter.  On the LOUIE Student Center page in the Academics section, in the drop-down list marked “other academics…” select Transfer Credit Report and click the “go” button next to the drop-down box

Step 6

Once your transfer credits have been posted, your major department is responsible for determining what coursework may be applied to your NAU program of study. Departments are often not able to complete this process unless they have received your course descriptions and/or syllabi.
