J-1 Incoming Exchange Students

There are two types of J-1 Students

Direct Exchange Students are chosen by their home university (one of NAU's partner institutions) to participate in a direct exchange.

RTR (Reduced Tuition Rate) Students are from NAU's partner institutions and are directed to NAU to participate in the Reduced Tuition Rate program

Criteria for participation

Good Academic Standing
must submit proof of TWO VACCINATIONS for measles (rubeola)since your first birthday

TOEFL Score
If English is not your first or native language, you must take the TOEFL exam or the IELTS test. You must have a minimum TOEFL score of 525 paper-based or 195 computer-based or 70 internet-based on your results or a IELTS band of 6.0. (Institutional code for sending official TOEFL score reports is 4006)

Provisions of Exchange Agreement

Tuition fees are paid to home institution. Some classes require special fees or deposits and you are responsible for paying the extra fees. Undergraduate students must register for a minimum of 12 credit hours/semester. AUDITS DO NOT COUNT.

Provisions of Reduced Tuition Rate (RTR) Agreement

Tuition fees are paid to Northern Arizona University. The RTR rate is 150% of regular NAU in-state tuition (review current RTR tuition rates). Undergraduate students must register for a minimum of 12 credit hours/semester.
